Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a type of eating disorder falling into the "Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)" category. It is characterized by recurrent binge eating without the regular use of compensatory measures (laxative and diuretic abuse, excessive exercise) to counter the binge eating. Most individuals suffering from BED are either overweight or obese; however people who are not overweight or obese can also suffer from BED as well. BED is estimated to affect 1-5% of the general population, and affects women slightly more than men (estimated that 60% are female and 40% male).

Characteristics:
  1. Frequent consumption of large amounts of food in short periods of time (bingeing)
  2. Eating when not hungry or in secret
  3. Feeling out of control over eating behaviors
  4. Feeling ashamed or disgusted by the behavior
  5. Eating alone because of embarrassment by amount one is eating
  6. Feeling ashamed, depressed, and guilty, especially after binging
Health Consequences of Binge Eating Disorder:

The health risks of BED are most commonly those associated with clinical obesity.  They include:

  1. High blood pressure and cholesterol
  2. Heart disease
  3. Type II Diabetes
  4. Gallbladder disease
