Womens Clinic

Several options for women's health care are available at the SHCC - Main Campus, the SHCC @Shands, and at the SHCC@Corry Village. There are women's health specialists that work in the Women's Clinic. This is a Nurse Practitioner run clinic that focuses on women's health issues. Women's health care is also provided in the Medical Team areas by physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

Do I need ECP?
  1. Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Plan B) are now available without a prescription in our pharmacy. They can also be purchased at an outside pharmacy. You must be 18 to purchase them. If you are under 18, contact a provider for a prescription.
  2. If you are not using any type of birth control. & have had unprotected intercourse, you need ECP. You may want to follow the bullets below.
  3. If you are using birth control, but have used it incorrectly, please contact your friendly pharmacy staff or Women’s Clinic nurses to discuss whether you need ECP or not.
  4. Visit the Emergency Contraception website for questions and answers.
General Services Provided:
  1. Counseling on contraceptive options, STD prevention, sexuality, and other women's health issues.
  2. Breast exams and instruction in self-examination.
  3. Pap smears and routine pelvic exams.
  4. The ThinPrep®, a liquid-based method, is the only pap smear method used at the SHCC. The ThinPrep® has the advantage that it can be checked with a DNA methodology for presence of viruses like HPV. The ThinPrep® can reveal more information, and the same specimen can be tested further if initial indications reveal abnormalities, saving the woman time and a return visit for another test.
  5. Pregnancy testing and referrals for optional services.
  6. Screening, diagnosis and treatment of STD's and vaginitis. Same day appointments are usually available for women experiencing symptoms.
  7. Routine testing may also be arranged.
  8. Abnormal pap follow-up, colposcopy, cryosurgery and LEEP.

Consultant Gynecologists are available for specific referrals such as abnormal pap follow-up, colposcopy, cryosurgery and LEEP. Please note, there may be additional charges for certain services, be sure to ask in advance!

Also, patients who are scheduling a Yearly Exam will be asked to fill out the Women's Health History Form and Health Risk Profile before an appointment with the Women's Clinic.
