What to Expect
In the course of pursuing their education, students often encounter many situations which impact their ability to be successful. Issues related to family, relationships, stress, body image, and many others can cause significant distress and interfere with day to day living. Our goal at Student Mental Health Services is to provide comprehensive services to address the needs of University of Florida students.
To access our services, a student can call 352-392-1171 to make an appointment with a counselor. On the day of your first scheduled appointment, come to our office located on the second floor of the Student Health Care Center. Once you check in, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork while you wait for your therapist in our waiting room. All information collected is confidential and is not part of your academic record at UF.
All appointments at SMHS last 50 minutes. During your first appointment with your therapist, or your intake session, you will be discussing what you are experiencing. It could be helpful to write down some key points or any questions you have for your therapist ahead of time. This intake session is the time when working together, you and your therapist will determine your therapeutic goals and which services best fit your needs.
For all subsequent appointments, you will check in the same way. Come to our office on the 2nd floor of the Student Health Care Center and let our receptionist staff know that you have arrived. Your therapist will come get you from our waiting room. In order to protect the confidentiality of all our clients, we ask that you please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes for your appointments. If you can not keep your scheduled appointment, please call the office (352-392-1171) to reschedule or cancel your appointment.
