Evaluation

Initial evaluations are carried out to clarify the nature of concerns or problems presented by students and to develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Individual Counseling and Psychotherapy

One-on-one counseling for personal problems, adjustment issues, and psychiatric disorders.

Couples Therapy

Therapy for problems with relationships.

Group Therapy

Groups provide a setting and support for addressing interpersonal difficulties. Students can learn more effective coping skills by sharing their concerns with others dealing with similar problems. Groups may be of a general nature, they may be selected to address the needs of specific populations, or to deal with particular problems. Check out the Summer 2008 Schedule.

Psychiatric Consultation

When indicated, a referral may be made to a staff psychiatrist for diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders and for the prescription and monitoring of medications.

Crisis Intervention Program

During the day, a staff member is available for urgent or crisis situations. On evenings, weekends, and holidays, a staff members is on-call by telephone or beeper for consultation and assistance with emergencies. Staff members will also facilitate referral and admission to inpatient psychiatric treatment units when the severity of a student's condition warrants more intensive care.

Consultation

Staff members of SMHS are available to consult with students, faculty, administrators, and colleagues in the university community on issues related to the emotional and psychological well-being of individual students or other members of the university community. Staff members also are available to campus departments, agencies, organizations, task forces, and committees to address overall issues affecting the climate of life on campus.
