Charges For Services

Are all services at the Student Health Care Center (SHCC) free when you pay the health fee?

No. When you choose to receive medical services from the SHCC you are legally and financially responsible for any charges related to the care provided at your visit.

What is the health fee and what does this fee cover?

The health fee is a service fee paid as part of tuition that goes to many campus-wide health initiatives. The health fee DOES NOT cover all possible medical charges at the SHCC. For the SHCC, the health fee covers patient financial responsibility associated with most SHCC office visits (for example, when a medical provider evaluates a sick patient but does not order any tests, procedures or prescriptions), and with telephone or online services initiated by the patient. Visit our “Student Health Fee” section for more information.

What if I’m not currently taking classes or paying the health fee?

Off-semester students, spouses/domestic partners, and students who do not pay the health fee as part of their tuition have two options based on their coverage status.

PLEASE NOTE: Office visit fees can vary depending upon whether you are uninsured or insured and what type of benefits are offered through your plan. Many plans have a specific amount that must be paid out of pocket by the patient before the insurance will begin to cover services. When you are seen by a medical provider for an injury or illness, the more complex your situation is, the more likely the charge will be on the higher end.

Feel free to contact Patient Financial Services before scheduling an appointment if you would like to get an estimate for your specific situation – we are here to help! Call (352) 273-4546 or email insurance@shcc.ufl.edu.

  • INSURED: Patients will be billed for the visit according to their insurance, including any co-pays applicable for the office visit and charges for services rendered. No money is due at the time of service, however, patients will receive a paper bill in the mail for the final amount due from Florida Clinical Practice Association.
  • UNINSURED: Patients will be billed for the visit according to the level of care needed, including the office visit and charges for services rendered. No money is due at the time of service, however, patients will receive a paper bill in the mail for the final amount due from Florida Clinical Practice Association.

What does the SHCC charge for?

Patients are financially responsible for items not covered by the health fee; these include, but are not limited to: health insurance; hospital visits; external community providers/facilities; physicals; procedures; X-rays; lab tests; medical equipment; prescriptions; non-prescription medications; vaccinations; massage; and physical therapy. The health fee is not considered health insurance.

Please note:

  • Patients may incur a no-show charge of $25 if they do not arrive on time, are 15 minutes late or do not cancel.
  • As not all tests can be performed in the SHCC lab, specimens may be sent to one of the following companies for analysis. Patients may receive a paper bill from one or more of these companies: Quest Diagnostics (www.questdiagnostics.com); LabCorp (www.labcorp.com; or UF Pathology Laboratories (UF PathLabs) (pathlabs.ufl.edu).

Will I be required to pay anything when I arrive at the Student Health Care Center?

With the exception of physical therapy, you are not required to pay for services the same day at the SHCC. (Currently, we are unable to accept same-day payments for most medical services.) Pharmacy items may be paid for same-day at the cashier in the SHCC Pharmacy, or may be deferred to the patient’s UF account.

Billing & Payment

Will you bill my insurance company for me?

The SHCC will bill your insurance company for you if you have submitted all related insurance information (see Online Insurance Verification Form) to us by the end of your visit.

  • You are financially responsible for service charges that are not covered by your policy.
  • We recommend reviewing all insurance benefits and exclusions before your first visit. Contact your insurance company and provide them our tax identification name and number (Florida Clinical Practice Association, 591680273) to learn how your policy will work at our facility.

How does billing work for psychiatry services at the Counseling and Wellness Center?

What do I need to know about health insurance billing?

  • Any paperwork related to services submitted to the insurance company will go to the mailing address of the policy holder; oftentimes, this is a parent or guardian who has purchased the insurance.
  • Health insurance does not cover all of the fees associated with health care. There is typically a shared cost with the patient, which may be in the form of a copay, coinsurance or a deductible.
  • While the office visit with your provider at SHCC Psychiatry at the CWC is supplemented by the health fee – a portion of tuition allocated to support health initiatives on campus – if you have lab work, prescriptions or any other testing, there will be charges for those services. You should see no out-of-pocket cost for your office visit if we bill your insurance.

Do I have the option to keep my services confidential? Yes, absolutely. We understand there may be instances where you want to keep your situation private and will assist you in making that happen. You can do this one of three ways: Notify the person you schedule your appointment with; Notify your psychiatrist; or Call SHCC Patient Financial Services at (352) 273-4546.

What if my psychiatrist orders labs? When having labs drawn at SHCC, there is a $15 convenience fee applied directly to your student account. This does not include any cost of the lab testing itself – this means you will also receive a bill for the tests; this charge may either be applied to your student account once the insurance has processed it or you will get a paper bill in the mail from one of the reference labs, Quest or LabCorp. If you would prefer to go directly to Quest or LabCorp to avoid the $15 convenience fee, you may ask your provider for a printed copy of the order to take with you. You may have to coordinate getting your results back to your provider.

How will I know if my insurance company has paid my bill? How do I follow up with them? What if I disagree with how they have paid?

Please visit Frequently Asked Questions: Health Insurance for answers to these questions and more.

When will I see charges for SHCC services?

Depending on whether or not you have paid the tuition-included health fee, charges will either appear on your UF account or be mailed to you.

If you provided your insurance information, charges cannot post until:

  • Your insurance company denies the claim
  • Your insurance company pays the claim, leaving a coinsurance, deductible, or non-covered services
  • Your insurance company hasn’t responded to the claim

If you did not provide your insurance information, your charges should appear within three months of the service date.

How can I pay my account balance?

If you are paying the health fee as part of your tuition, charges for services obtained at the SHCC not covered by the health fee or health insurance are sent to the student’s UF account. The University Bursar offers several payment options – contact their office directly with any questions or concerns: Call (352) 392-0181 or visit UF Finance and Accounting – Payment Options.

  • Online – www.fa.ufl.edu/bursar: Pay by Discover, MasterCard, American Express or Electronic Check.
  • In-person – S113 Criser Hall: Personal check, cashier’s check or money order accepted.
  • By mail: University Bursar, S113 Criser Hall, P.O. Box 114050. Gainesville, Florida 32611-4050. Personal check, cashier’s check or money order accepted.

If you are an off-semester student, spouse/domestic partner, or do not pay the health fee as part of your tuition, you will receive a bill from Florida Clinical Practice Association.
