The Importance of Combined Psychiatry and Counseling

Collaborative Care Model: Integration of psychiatry, therapy, and general medical services has been shown to improve patient outcomes, control costs, and reduce stigma related to mental health.

Both SHP and the CWC attempt to optimize integration of care by having psychiatry providers, therapists, and primary care providers (PCPs) work closely together. The psychiatry providers and therapists have access to each other’s notes in our records system and additionally consult with each other if needed. Psychiatry providers also routinely collaborate with PCPs. In most cases, SHP providers will also refer students to community counseling in efforts to improve treatment outcomes.
