Sports medicine is a specialized field within Family Medicine that concentrates on preventing, diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating injuries associated with sports and physical activity.

Acute care specifically addresses urgent medical needs, such as sudden injuries, ensuring prompt treatment to minimize complications and promote recovery.

What type of injuries does the Sports Medicine & Acute Care clinic treat?

What kind of medical provider will I be seeing for my injury?

Our sports medicine physicians are the primary care team physicians for the University Athletic Association (UAA). Together, the Sports Medicine & Acute Care providers have over 75 years of experience taking care of the Florida Gators. In addition to their training and experience, our providers are members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Do you have an x-ray on site?

Yes, we have an x-ray in our building and a team of radiology technicians.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Always call the SHCC if you need to be seen by a provider. You can reach us at 352-392-1161 and select the option for Sports Medicine & Acute Care.

If I need medical equipment, such as crutches or a sling, can I get them at the Student Health Care Center?

Yes, we have various medical equipment available for purchase.

Is the Sports Medicine & Acute Care clinic open after hours or on weekends?

The Sports Medicine & Acute Care clinic at the SHCC is open during business hours. Click here to view the hours. Additionally, acute care is open on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. during the Fall and Spring semesters.

What should I do if I have an injury outside of clinic hours?

The Student Health Care Center has a provider on-call 24/7 for medical advice. They can help triage you over the phone and provide recommendations for next steps. To get in contact with the on-call provider after hours, call us at 352-392-1161 and follow the prompt to speak to the on-call provider.

Can you help with rehabilitation after an injury?

Patients are often referred to physical therapy for rehabilitation. UF Health Rehab* has a satellite location in our facility for the convenience of our patients. If you have any questions about the physical therapy services, call us at 352-392-1161 and select the option for physical therapy.

*As of September 1, 2024, students with United Health Care insurance are not covered at UF Health Rehab. The SHCC will refer these patients to community physical therapy providers.

  • NOTE: We will bill your insurance for all services rendered. There will be no out of pocket expense for you to be evaluated in the Sports Medicine and Acute Care Clinic and you do not need a referral to schedule an appointment; However, if X-rays, procedures, concussion testing or other tests are needed, charges will be assessed. Additionally, certain equipment (i.e. crutches, braces, etc.) issued during your visit may incur an additional fee.

Patients are often referred to Physical Therapy for rehabilitation. Charges are assessed for physical therapy services.
