Prescriptions & Refills
The SHCC Pharmacy accepts electronic prescriptions from any physician in the U.S. that subscribes to the Surescripts network.
We accept insurance!
The SHCC Pharmacy accepts a variety of commercial prescription plans when the associated plan’s card is presented at the time of purchase. Contact us directly at (352) 392-1760 with any questions regarding prescription coverage.
PLEASE NOTE: Mixing various prescription and non-prescription medications—including supplements and vitamins—can result in serious, life-threatening drug interactions. NEVER take prescription medications not prescribed to you by a licensed medical professional, and make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you’re taking, even if it seems harmless to you. Additionally, sharing your prescription medications with friends or family can end in dangerous health consequences for them—and serious legal complications for you.
Medication information and questions
If you have questions about your medication or need to speak to a pharmacist, call (352) 392-1760 or (866) 941-1760 during normal business hours.
- Side effects: Contact your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may also report side effects directly to the FDA: (800) FDA-1088 [800-332-1088].
- SafeMedication.com: A helpful site that provides a searchable drug database offering comprehensive, easy-to-read information on more than 700 medications.
Please take the proper steps to ensure you avoid medication mistakes. This includes:
1. Find out the name of your medication. Rather than simply letting your doctor write a prescription and send you on your way, be sure to ask the name of the medication. SHCC recommends taking a photo of your medication labels to keep track of the name, dose strength and directions.
2. Ask questions about how to use the medication. Take notes or ask your doctor to write down instructions or other information that is important to know about your medication or condition to help you remember.
3. Know what your medication is for. It’s important to understand your medication because you are more likely to use it correctly, more likely to know what to expect from the medication, and better able to report what you are using and problems to your doctors and pharmacist.
4. Read medicine labels and follow directions. Before you use any medication, you should know when to use it, how much to use, and how long to use it. Be sure to read the medication label every time. There are (free) refill reminder apps available for patients to document and stay on schedule with medications. Be sure to set a reminder when it’s time for your next dose.
5. Keep all of your health care providers informed about your medications and dietary supplements (including vitamins and herbals). Make it a habit of keeping all of your health care professionals informed about everything that you use will help ensure that you do not use two medicines with the same active ingredient or use anything that will interact with something else you are using.

Sharps Disposal Program at SHCC
To ensure a clean and safe campus for all those who call UF home, the Student Health Care Center has created a sharps disposal program that UF students can utilize to safely dispose of approved biomedical waste items.
What is a sharps container, and why do I need one?
A sharps container is a safe, hard plastic container used to dispose of sharp objects like needles, syringes, lancets, and other medical items. It’s important to dispose of these items properly to prevent injury and ensure public safety.
Why is it important to dispose of sharps correctly?
Proper disposal of sharps helps maintain a clean, safe campus for all members of the UF community. It prevents accidental injuries, reduces the risk of transmitting serious diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV, and ensures biomedical waste is handled according to health and safety regulations.
Can I purchase a red sharps container on campus?
Yes, you can purchase an approved, red sharps container for $5 at the SHCC Pharmacy*.
*Students can choose to pay at the time of checkout or have this cost forwarded to their Bursar account.
What kind of sharps containers will be accepted?
Only red, hard plastic sharps containers with a self-locking lid will be accepted. Containers not purchased through SHCC will be accepted if they meet these requirements.
What items can I put in the sharps container?
You can safely dispose of the following items in your sharps container:
- Lancets
- Injection needles
- Injection syringes
- Auto-injection pens
- Prefilled injection syringes
How full can I fill my sharps container?
Fill your sharps container up to the “FILL LINE” marked on all four sides of the container lid. This is usually about 3/4 full. For safety purposes, please do not fill the container beyond this line.
How do I seal the sharps container?
Once the container is full, securely close the self-locking lid. For extra safety, you may tape the lid with two pieces of packing or heavy-duty tape to ensure it stays sealed.
How do I return a full sharps container?
Once your sharps container is sealed, bring it to the SHCC. Proceed to check in with the support staff member at the Sports Medicine & Acute Care desk on the first floor. You will need to provide your UFID to confirm your student status. Shortly thereafter, a nursing staff member will assist you with the disposal.
Do I need an appointment to return a sharps container?
No, you do not need an appointment to return an approved, red sharps container. You can walk in during business hours, Monday through Friday, to properly dispose of your sharps.
Will SHCC accept loose sharps or any other type of container?
No, the SHCC will NOT accept loose sharps or any sharps that are not properly sealed in a red, self-locking sharps container. This is for everyone’s safety.
What if I have more questions about the Sharps Disposal Program?
If you have any other questions or need assistance, feel free to call the SHCC at 352-392-1161 and select the option for the “Sports Medicine & Acute Care” department.
